This week, the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) released new data showing the number of complaints received between October and December 2011.

In the 2011/12 financial year, 187,853 complaints have been received by FOS so far, suggesting that across the whole year, complaints will greatly exceed the 206,121 received in 2010/11.

Complaints in Q3 (55,907) have slightly increased compared to Q2 (50,645) as PPI complaints increased 57% to 30,301. PPI now accounts for 54% of complaints to FOS as shown below:

Natalie Ceeney, the Chief Ombudsman at FOS said:

“The challenges of our PPI workload are unprecedented. The number of new complaints about mis-sold PPI that we are assuming we will receive in 2012/2013 – 165,000 – will account for around 60% of our new cases next year. Initial feedback from stakeholders suggests that most believe we will continue to receive substantial volumes of PPI complaints for another two or three years.”
